The Vision
Everything begins with a vision.
Consider this.... If you had knowledge that a “revolutionary” product was about to be offered to the public, which virtually everyone would use and you could be one of the first to offer this product and earn a commission on each and every sale. Would you get excited and involved?
Well that’s exactly what happened in 1906. A company known as General Electric was approached by none other than a man named Thomas Edison. Yes, this was the birth of “Lighting Technology” and the beginning of mass retailing of a product that brightened our lives and our futures.
Now let us fast forward to the late 1970’s and a company by the name of Hewlett Packard introduced a consumer model inkjet jet printer. HP (as many consumers now refer to the company) quickly realized that a “stand alone” printing device priced at about $1000 would be something every homeowner would buy. HP decided to utilize the “Tried and True” marketing method of the successful Gillette (the razor blade) Company. Let us develop a “low cost” printing device which would be very affordable to businesses and homeowners alike. Once they purchased our printer device then they have to buy only the ink or toner products we offer at whatever price we elect for the life of the machine. We have for many years referred to this marketing philosophy as the “Razor and Blade Theory”. It is a great marketing strategy for a manufacturer of any piece of equipment to lock in their consumer to only their replacement products. Vacuum cleaners and their collection bags is another example of this strategy. Not fair to the consumer but very profitable to the manufacturer.
Today there are over 90 million printing devices installed in American homes and businesses and they use an astounding 600,000,000 cartridges per year. Surveys show 8 out of 10 families have a home printer along with 9 out of 10 businesses. The market growth is not in selling the printer that market is all most saturated. The real opportunity is in offering the INK and TONER to the consumer!
Why should a few “Large Box” retailers such as Staples, Quill (a subsidiary of Staples), Office Depot and Office Max sell roughly 80% of the Ink and Toner cartridges to U.S consumers and businesses?
Why should those “Big 3” control this $50 Billion dollar a year industry?
They won’t for very much longer!
Cartridge Superstore is here!
With rapid changes in technology consumers will experience a substantial shift in the way ink and toner products in America are sold. The buying habits of the “American Consumer” are about to “GET SMARTER”! With an estimated 15-20% built in overhead expense (building leases, employees, insurance, utilities, etc) the traditional “brick and mortar” store can’t avoid paying, along with the increase in sales of printing products online will make it extremely difficult to survive and compete in the supply business.
FACT: Office Depot sales decreased by 14% and losses amounted to 413 million in the 3rd Quarter
FACT: Reuters News Service - Top office products retailer Staples Inc on Tuesday reported a 38 percent drop in quarterly profit as costs increased. (08/25/2009)
FACT: Office supplies retailer OfficeMax has decided to close a customer call center in suburban Cleveland, affecting more than 200 workers.
The retail landscape is changing. Stores at the local strip mall are going away, just like candle shops of the early 19th century, which the light bulb quickly replaced. It’s unfortunate but it’s true. Social Networking is the new light bulb and it will change how products are sold in this country.
Currently 60% of Ink and Toner consumer products are purchased online shopping at home or at the office. Estimates show that percentage will change to closer to 90% by the year 2012.
